Pastor's Column

February 9, 2020 Pastor's column

The first Borromeo Bash was a wonderful success last year and the second, last week, was even better.  For the benefit of our school, an enterprising group of school families has organized a formal dinner/casino night with a live auction and a silent auction.  The amount of planning and promotion that has taken place behind the scenes has been monumental.  We had a wonderful evening of fun and fellowship with a sell-out crowd again this year.  The profits will help buy new computers and security cameras for our school.  We offer thanks to all who helped with the organization, all of the contributing sponsors, all who bid and donated so generously, and all who took part.

This weekend marks the beginning of National Marriage Week, concluding on Valentine’s Day.  This is a good time to look at one of the most beautiful vocations in the Church-- a call to offer one’s life in service to a spouse and then to children if they should follow.  We pray for all married couples and those who are discerning that call.

I regret missing the Fort Wayne March for Life this year; I had a funeral, a wedding, confessions and a vigil Mass that Saturday.  I am told, though, that we had a good representation from our parish.  I am also much encouraged to hear that 40 teens from St. Charles travelled to Washington for the March for Life.  What a beautiful witness, especially coming from our young people.  A baby is a beautiful gift from God, no matter how small and no matter what the circumstances.  A baby is to be treasured.

A note from our parish secretary:  We had 17 new families register in the parish in January.  Things are hopping at St. Charles.  Spread the Good News.

One other note:  this Sunday is the Feast Day of St. Apollonia, the patron saint of dentists.  Offer an extra prayer today for yours.
