I am in North Carolina this weekend, visiting with the man who is now using my left kidney. His wife is preparing a big meal and their children and grandchildren are coming to meet me. It is the closest I’ll ever come to being a celebrity. On Monday morning I head to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Georgia, for five days of silent retreat with the Trappist monks. I will return on Aug. 24.
This weekend, you won’t be able to miss our annual Seminarian Bake Sale. All proceeds are split among our diocesan seminarians for their daily expenses: car repairs, gas, books, dental appointments, eye glasses, and such. As you will remember, the diocese has a different effort in the spring, the Pentecost Collection. The Pentecost Collection raises funds for tuition, room and board. This weekend please buy some cookies or a cake and help our seminarians with daily expenses.
We thank the Vocation Committee for organizing our bake sale and all of the donors, especially the sponsors, who make nice donations. St. Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of seminarians. I think that we are doing him proud.
School is back in session and we are glad to have our campus full of life during the week. For those who come to daily Mass, be aware that we will have school Masses at 8:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On those days the church will be locked during Mass with a security guard in the Gathering Space. If you arrive late, come to the right door from the parking lot and he will let you in.
Fr. Jery has been in much demand, giving retreats and mission talks in various parishes around the country, often in his own native language. In October he is going international. He has been asked to give a mission at a parish in Canada. He is working out the complicated visa issues to make that happen.
