Pastor's Column

August 24 pastor's column

We are taking up a collection throughout the diocese this weekend to help with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.  Half of the funds will be used by Catholic Relief Service and half by the Catholic Near East Welfare Organization, two groups which have a presence in Gaza and are doing their best to help with food and medical care.  Checks can be made out to St. Charles with “Gaza” written in the memo line.

Our parish Religious Education program is designed for children grades 1-8 who are not enrolled in a Catholic school.  Monday evening classes begin at 6:30 on September 8.  For information or to register a child, call Keith or Cindy at 484-7322, e-mail them at religiouseducation@scbfw.org, or go to our parish website, click “menu”, then “faith formation” and you will find information.

Check the bulletin for information on the newest event at Cardinal Fest:  a mushball tournament.  Teams of nine or more adults can play a game very similar to softball, but with a larger ball that becomes softer and softer as the game goes along.  You won’t need a mitt, experience, or much athletic talent.

For the next two weekends we will have a blue barrel in the Gathering Space.  Please consider helping those in need here in Fort Wayne.  Catholic Charities, A Baby’s Closet, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Miss Virginia’s Food Pantry are joining together for this collection.  They are especially in need of baby diapers, unscented wipes, adult diapers, hygiene items, new socks and underwear, and non-perishable food items.

With Cardinal Fest coming on September 5 and 6, we will also be collecting in the Gathering space two-liter bottles of pop, pre-packaged treats, fun-sized candy and gift cards for bingo prizes.  We will make sure that the healthy foods go into the blue barrels while the pop, candy and cakes go to Cardinal Fest!
