Pastor's Column

August 31 pastor's column

Monday is Labor Day, a day of rest for most people.  We have only one Mass on Monday, at 8:15 a.m., and the parish office will be closed on Monday.

If any parents have not yet registered their children for Religious Education classes, please do not delay; classes begin on September 8.  For children grades 1-8 who are not enrolled in a Catholic school, this is a great opportunity.  Our children learn to pray, they learn about the Scriptures and the teachings of the Church, they are prepared for Sacraments, and they talk about God and the faith life.  Classes are held on Monday evenings.  For information call Keith or Cindy at 484-7322 or e-mail religiouseducation@scbfw.org.

In the blue barrel in the Gathering Space we are collecting items to help the poor here in Fort Wayne.  Four local charitable groups are working together, asking for diapers (both baby and adult-sized), toiletries, new socks and underwear, and non-perishable foods.  The barrel be here through next weekend.

Next weekend we will also provide a chance to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Walk for the Poor.  We’ll have a table in the Gathering Space for that good cause.

We thank all of the volunteers, donors and buyers here last weekend helping with our St. Vincent de Paul “Stuff a Truck” and also our Knights of Columbus garage sale.  With a big football event at the same time, we had a busy Sunday afternoon.

Cardinal Fest, our parish festival, will be held on Saturday, September 5.  Please join us for fun events.  Please note that our handicap parking places will be limited for Saturday evening Mass next weekend.

I’m covering Mass in LaGrange this Sunday morning and then leaving on Sunday afternoon for five days in Chicago.  This is the fourth of six five-day sessions to prepare pastors for supervising transitional deacons.  I’ll be back Friday afternoon in time for Cardinal Fest weekend.  Then I will leave again next Sunday afternoon for a ten-day vacation with old seminary classmates.
