Pastor's Column

January 25 pastor's column

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the dedication of our church building, the second church in our parish.  We have a short video before Mass to give a bit of history and we have different prayers and readings for the Mass as we celebrate the anniversary.  Thanks are due to Fr. Bobby for catching this anniversary and researching the details of the liturgy.  Thanks are also owed to Josh Schipper, who made the video.

This weekend marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week.  Students will be seen wearing crazy clothing, socks and hair fashions through the week as we join in some fun.  On Thursday, our attention will be on the Blessed Sacrament.  We will have Adoration in the church beginning at 9:00 and ending with Benediction at 2:25.  We are grateful for our excellent staff and faculty and we are grateful for the families who do so much to support our parish school.  Most of our students go on to Bishop Dwenger High School, we are also blessed by our outstanding Catholic high school.

Our parish will take part in the diocesan Synod, sharing with the bishop and with each other our thoughts on the ministries that are working well in the Church and the ministries that could use more attention.  Our Parish Consultation event will be held on Sunday afternoon, February 22, from 2:00-3:30.  You can sign up with the QR code in this week’s bulletin or on sign-up sheets in the Gathering Space.  If you would be willing to be a timekeeper or notetaker for the event, let us know.

This Wednesday evening, January 28, our 6:30 Mass will be the official Prayerful Opening for our parish efforts in the synod.  We will have special music at that Mass, we will hear more information about the synod, and synod booklets will be passed out at that Mass.  From that point, we will have a synod prayer card in the pews which we will pray at Mass from the Prayerful Opening until our Parish Consultation on Feb. 22.

This is the season of colds and flu.  Many people are not anxious to shake hands during the sign of peace during this season.  If you would rather offer a smile and a nod of the head, that is perfectly OK.  And if you are a handshaker, don’t stress over someone who declines the handshake and smiles instead.
