Pastor's Column

July 19 pastor's column

A group of Knights of Columbus from across the state will gather at St. Charles next Saturday.  With a Mass and a banquet, members will be inducted into the fourth degree.  The Knights of Columbus is an organization for Catholic men which offers fraternity and spiritual events, and encourages service in the parish.  Fourth degree members are the ones who take part in processions and honor guards at big events.  Until a few years ago they wore hats with an ostrich plume.  Changing with the times and fashion, they now wear berets.  They still get to carry a sword.

[A funny memory:  Many years ago a lady complained to Bishop Crowley:  “Jesus is the Prince of Peace.  Why do you allow those men to carry weapons in to Mass?”  Bishop Crowley responded, “I don’t think they plan to use them.”]

Contractors will be submitting bids this week for construction of our new Borromeo Center.  We are making progress on this project, with hopes that we can start construction in late summer and have the building complete by next June.

We have replaced some old HVAC units on our school this summer and repaved parts of the parking lot.  Meanwhile, our maintenance crew has been busy waxing floors, cleaning, and getting everything ready for a new school year.  We also have some fun projects.  Steve Springer is doing an overhaul in the original church sacristy, replacing cracked orange floor tiles, particle-board cabinetry, and 50-year-old plumbing fixtures.   Girl Scouts have planted new flowerbeds in the school courtyard, and our seminarian Mason has the waterfall in our courtyard pond running once again.  School starts in just a little over 3 weeks.
