Pastor's Column

July 6 pastor's column

Bishop Rhoades will be joining us at St. Charles for the 11:00 Mass on July 20.  The bishop has been to St. Charles for Confirmation Masses every year and also for various school events, but he hasn’t been to a parish weekend Mass for a long while.  Mark your calendar for that weekend; it will be an honor to have him.

I offer thanks to the Knights of Columbus for the beautiful landscape work they have done around the west and south doors of the church.  We have had erosion problems at those doors, with dirt running down onto the sidewalks.  On a very hot day the Knights dug up sod, spread garden fabric, and then added two tons of rock.  It looks great.  Thanks also to Sue Miller and Jeanette Hatfield for all of their work with the flowers around the church.  We have a beautiful place of worship.

The Annual Bishop’s Appeal video will be presented as usual in September, and we will distribute pledge cards then.  Everyone will have a chance to make a one-time donation or to make monthly donations.  For those who like to make monthly donations, note that the appeal runs on the fiscal year, beginning on July 1.  If you want to spread your monthly donations over ten or even twelve months, you can’t wait until September to begin, but need to make your pledge now.  Go to  diocesefwsb.org/aba and you can make the pledge, setting up payments over the year.

As we celebrate a Jubilee Year, Bishop Rhoades will be offering a series of Jubilee Masses in churches across the diocese.  A Pontifical Blessing will be offered at each of these Masses, and with the usual conditions, a plenary indulgence is attached.  These are the Masses on our end of the diocese, each on a Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.:  St. Anthony Angola on Aug. 13; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton on Oct. 8; Ss. Peter and Paul, Huntington on Oct. 29.
