On Friday, July 17, the diocese is offering a “Day of Discernment with Priests and Seminarians.” Any young man, age 15-35, who might want to learn more about priesthood is invited to meet at Chain O’ Lakes State Park for a day of discussion, kayaking, hiking and a cookout lunch. For information and registration go to diocesefwsb.org/discern-priesthood and click on “discern priesthood” or pick up a flyer on a table in the back of church. It sounds like a fun day.
We are happy to see the city improving our streets and sidewalks, and I am impressed by the amount of work going on in Fort Wayne this summer—surely a sign of a city that is serious about maintaining our neighborhoods. However, after three weeks I still find myself forgetting that our stretch of Reed Road is one-way going south. The “Road Closed” signs take me by surprise every time. An added barrier is coming: on Monday, 6/29, our parish has a paving company replace the asphalt in our north entrance, our access to Trier. Unless the weather is bad and the paving is canceled, that entrance will be closed on Monday. The only access to our main parking lot that day will be traveling south on Reed. I offer apologies to all who are coming for the funeral and funeral luncheon on Monday. Please remember to approach the church driving south on Reed.
St. John New Haven is currently renovating their church and celebrating Sunday Masses in their gym. Until the renovation is done, they are borrowing other parish churches for their funerals and weddings. We are happy to welcome them to St. Charles for a funeral this Tuesday. We remember the days a few years back when St. Charles was under renovation. We borrowed neighboring churches for weddings, funerals and even our First Communion.
Next weekend we will celebrate the 4th of July with special zeal, remembering the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Our office will be closed on Friday the 3rd and we will offer special prayers for our nation at the Saturday morning Mass.
