Pastor's Column

October 25 pastor's column

Next Sunday, Nov. 1, is All Saints’ Day.  While this is typically a Holy Day of Obligation, since it falls on a Sunday, the Sunday obligation and the holy day obligation merge.  Only one weekend Mass is required.  We will use the readings and prayers of All Saints on Saturday evening and Sunday.

Monday, Nov. 2 is All Soul’s Day.  We will have an evening candlelight Mass in a dark church at 6:30 p.m.  We will read the names of parishioners who have died in the past year and light a candle for each.  Everyone is welcome to this beautiful Mass.  If you have a loved one who died since last November and they didn’t have a St. Charles funeral, give us a call and we will add the name to our list.

Throughout the month of November we will keep a book in the front of the church with names of loved ones who have died, remembering them in prayer.  Feel free to add names to the book.  It is the same book which has been used for many years; there is no need to repeat names already in the book.

If you or someone in your family is homebound or in a nursing facility, let us know.  We try to arrange Communion calls and homebound visits for those who are not able to come to Mass.  Call the parish office at 260-482-2186.

Though I haven’t heard any dates yet, I think that the construction of our new Borromeo Center will begin soon.  The bishop has signed the contract, we have applied for many permits, and I expect that earth moving will begin soon.  We have commissioned a mosaic and three paintings for the gathering area inside the building.  The artists are at work and the early progress Is very exciting.

The Knights of Columbus are recruiting new members this weekend.  The chapter of Knights in our parish is an outstanding group.  They have monthly meetings with prayer, discussion and social time, and they are involved in dozens of projects, helping out with parish events and helping parishioners in need.  I highly recommend this group for any Catholic men.

Our parish Mental Health committee will have a table in the Gathering Space this weekend.  If you or someone in your family suffers from mental health issues, check out this friendly group.
