Pastor's Column

September 20 pastor's column

The St. Vincent de Paul Society has their Walk for Hope this weekend on Sunday afternoon.  If you haven’t yet made a pledge, stop by the table in the Gathering Space or go to the website svdpfortwayne.org, click on the Walk for Hope, and indicate that you are donating for St. Charles.  These funds enable our parish group to do a lot of good for people in financial trouble.

I offer a big word of thanks to the crowd of volunteers who made Cardinal Fest a great success again this year.  The weather was good, the crowds were large, and I think that everyone had a good time.  Thank you to those who put in long hours to make this event happen.

We have people bringing the Offertory gifts up the aisle at each weekend Mass.  This is a simple task, and kids especially like to take part.  You could save our ushers the duty of recruiting people if you would occasionally volunteer.  There is a binder on the writing desk in the Gathering Space with a sign-up sheet.  This is a simple way to serve the parish.

Mark your calendar for an upcoming ecumenical visit which should be very interesting.  We have been invited to St. John Chrysostom Antiochian Orthodox Church at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 5.  The pastor will give us a tour, tell us about the history and the liturgy of this Orthodox Church.  Though I have never been inside, they have very interesting architecture, a collection of icons, and they use ancient language and rituals in their liturgy.  As Roman Catholics, we are not in Communion with the Orthodox, but we do recognize that they have apostolic succession and valid sacraments.  Join us to learn more.  The church is in a very small side street north of Dupont and Coldwater, 402 Badiac Road.  We will meet at their church at 7:00 or carpool from St. Charles at 6:30.

The Franciscan Center is asking for help in providing food for their sack lunch ministry.  They will pass out grocery bags after Masses next weekend.  They ask they you return the bags the following weekend, October 3 and 4, with non-perishable food items which could be helpful for the poor.
